Anatomy for Artists

My Journey as a Foreign Artist in the US

Breaking into the industry is tough, but trying to do it as a foreign artist with all the visa restrictions is on another level. I’ve been through pretty much every crazy legal process you can think of over the past ten years. Hopefully sharing my story can make things a little easier for anyone going through the same struggles now.

Audiences want stories that meet their expectations… just not in the way they expect. To accomplish this today, directors and producers increasingly rely on their animators, VFX artists, and XR designers to bring their stories to life. In this session, we will dive into how filmmakers have subverted story ‘formulas”. This includes ‘forms’ such as Time (Christopher Nolan), Setting (Cohen Brothers), Endings (Michael Arndt), and even entire Genres and Tropes. How cultural differences impact story expectations (i.e., Eastern versus Western storytelling [Do all stories have conflict?]). Appeal is subjective, elusive, and very difficult to quantify, but it makes our art BEAUTIFUL. I will discuss how I understand appeal, break it down into fundamental components, and get as close as possible to objectivity. (Fair warning, this might get a little scientific...) Heroes Within, a new and affirming initiative, is designed to center the voices of LGBTQ+ youth and young adults, celebrate their strengths, and support healing through art and storytelling. Hear how queer artists are collaborating to design the heroic alter egos created by the participating youth during individual interviews - visual representations of their strength, courage and creativity. A beautiful and powerful touring exhibit of the superheroes’ posters, character stories, and Words of Wisdom written for their younger peers will bring awareness, understanding, care, and appreciation. Convention Tabling 101

The panel aims to offer an A-to-Z crash course on tabling at conventions, ideal for newcomers and beneficial even for seasoned artists.
